Learning Support

Learning Support is available to students, also gifted students, who may be experiencing difficulties in the learning environment of the school. It is also for students who need to develop learning strategies and whose social competence and interaction skills may hinder further development.

Organisation

Learning Support is granted to an individual student or small groups and should help them to develop age appropriate skills. Participation is on the recommendation of the class teacher. It takes the form of a partnership between the school and parents. An Individual Educational Plan (IEP) is devised by the Learning-Support Teacher in conjunction with the recommendations of the class teacher.

Aproach

  • The class teacher will contact parents regarding any problems in the the student’s progress. A declaration of consent is signed, so that further steps can be taken.
  • If Learning Support is recommended, there is another meeting at which an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) is presented by the school, and signed by teachers and parents.
  • A review date is set, approximately six months into the programme.

Please send further enquires to the subject teacher directly.

SEN (Special Educational Needs)

For a student, who despite Learning Support and an individual education plan (IEP) doesn’t show any appropriate development, the teachers can recommend further assessments by a psychologist. They may have to participate in the programme "Special Educational Needs" (SEN).

The following children are designated for the SEN programme:

  • Students with serious learning difficulties who cannot follow the curriculum.
  • Students with behavioural, emotional problems.
  • Physically disabled students.

The SEN programme aims to help students with a specific programme, making the entire curriculum accessible to students experiencing difficulties.

Organisation:

  • The support is flexible. It takes place within the class or individually and is tailored to suit the needs of the child. Small groups can be created.
  • Teacher specialists are involved in learning.
  • External specialists can also be involved.
  • Recommendations of the class and support teachers are discussed and further assistance may be requested.
  • Parents must request SEN-Support from the Director of the Primary school.
  • Assessment by a psychologist is required (renewable every two-years) and has to be made  in the language of the department issued.
  • An advisory committee discusses and decides whether a child is accepted to the SEN programme.
  • A binding contract for one year is completed and signed by the parents and school.
  • SEN may continue in the secondary school. All students that continue in the secondary level, need a current psychological test before the review in June, if they wish to continue on the SEN programme.
  • For a smooth transition the SEN-primary school teachers can continue the teaching in the secondary school.

In cases where the school is not able to provide the necessary educational support for a pupil, it can declare itself incompetent. The school is committed to assisting parents in the search for a proper educational environment.
