The European Schools Science Symposium

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory


We are very grateful to the European Molecular Biology Laboratory for allowing us to have the symposium on their premises in Heidelberg.

 

It is a non-profit organisation funded by 18 member states. EMBL’s mission is to perform molecular biology research but also to train scientists and students. EMBL has an active programme for schools and teachers including the ELLS (European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences) which aims to bridge the gap between research and schools.



 

We provide mother-tongue education—in different language sections—from Kindergarten up to Baccalaureate level (university entrance) for around 1000 pupils from a wide variety of backgrounds. Currently 16 languages are taught in the school, and 49 different nationalities are represented. The European Baccalaureate, awarded ONLY by the European Schools, is recognised as a qualification for university entrance by all member states of the European Union and by other countries including the USA.
