MUN – Model United Nations – is an opportunity offered each year to the 6th and 7th Year students, where they can discuss topics which affect the whole world at the moment, similar to the actual UN. Many other schools from various countries were met in Athens for that event. The European School of Karlsruhe had participated in the DSA MUN many times before this year.
Those who wanted to join met each Tuesday after school together with Fr. Stricker and Mr. Maguire the supervising counselors to prepare for the conference. Due to the hard work, energy and time we invested in our resolutions, we were deeply disturbed by the strikes in Athens.
Our original flight on Wednesday had been cancelled.
We were possibly going to fly on Tuesday morning but this idea was cancelled as well.
A last minute booking was made which would enable us to leave for Athens Tuesday afternoon. However this flight was cancelled as well!
Everyone had given up the idea of going to Athens.
Miraculously we managed to get a flight on Wednesday afternoon that was the only one arriving in Athens. With the generous help of the teachers and parents we were able to get the whole group together and depart.
Therefore, we were very exhausted upon our arrival but still very glad that we made it after all.
The next day we went to the Deutsche Schule Athen where the event took place. There we attained the opening ceremony and had authorities like the German ambassadors who held a speech. Everything was very formal, also the dress code and the way of speaking. We all had name tags with the name of our country and our committee.
We represented two countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ireland. In that country everyone belonged to a different committee. The first stage, lobbying, was about forming alliances and getting your own resolution signed by others. In the time after that we debated the Resolutions. The best Resolutions were then debated in the General Assembly on the last day.
The Closing Ceremony was quite emotional for many of us, since we had grown attached to the people we met in MUN. The president and chair were also rather sad that the event was over.
Some of our group also went to the party on the last day, others used the opportunity to see more of Athens.
Then on Sunday at 4am we had to leave already. All in all we agree that this trip was worth our previous efforts and every one of us gained experiences. But most important of all we enjoyed the work, meeting new people and had a great time there!
